Phoenix Editorial & Designs Gives Shine to Oscar Nominated Documentary Short, “La Corona”

San Francisco, CA (February 20, 2008)—Phoenix Editorial & Designs recently completed film titles, color correction, and finishing on the Oscar nominated documentary short “La Corona.” The 40-minute film is directed by Amanda Micheli and Isabel Vega and produced by Runaway Films and Vega Films. “La Corona” is up for Best Documentary Short at the 80th Annual Academy Awards®, and also won an honorable mention from the Shorts Jury at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.

For EA Games Title “skate”

San Francisco, CA (September 4, 2007)—Phoenix Editorial & Designs has wrapped a three-spot TV campaign for “skate,” the new title from EA Games and developer EA Black Box for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 game consoles. Edited by Bob Frisk for HSI directors The Malloys via ad shop HEAT, the commercials star pro riders Mike Carroll, Rob Dyrdek, Terry Kennedy, Ryan Gallant and Danny Way, whose thumbs—which are used to control the new “Flickit” game control scheme—bring them as much fame as their skateboarding. The campaign broke Sept. 1, 2007.

The film introduces the product’s new “Creative License” marketing campaign, tagline, logo, packaging and identity. The film debuted at the official CS3 launch event in New York City during a presentation by Adobe CEO Bruce Chizen, and has been showcased on the Adobe web site homepage and at several live events to promote the new software suite.

Director Jordan Brady from prodco Uber Content helmed the ad “Sensei,” which introduces the Ubisoft title “Red Steele” for the new Nintendo console Wii. Both spots broke nationally this month.

Edited by Bob Frisk with visual effects by Phoenix’s Matt Silverman, the campaign promotes PG&E’s forward-looking programs and community initiatives in a lighthearted and endearing way. The :30 ads were directed by Park Picture’s Alison Maclean via ad agency Venables, Bell & Partners. “Action Figure” and “Letting Go” broke February 27, while “Night Light” and “Solar Schools” break this week.

Phoenix Edit, Effects & Design has wrapped a TV commercial for California Tourism via Sacramento, CA-based ad agency Mering & Associates.   Edited by Robbie Proctor and directed by The Malloys via RSA, the :30 ad features a host of familiar Californians, including Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, Clint Eastwood, Teri Hatcher, Volleyball star Misty May, and skateboarder Tony Hawk, all inviting tourists to come see California.   California Tourism is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting travel to the state.   Two versions of the spot “Do you feel lucky” broke nationwide March 13th.

PHOENIX EDIT, EFFECTS & DESIGN WRAPS CG SPOT FOR NEW KONAMI GAME, “DANCE DANCE REVOLUTION: EXTREME 2”

San Francisco, CA —Phoenix Edit, Effects & Design has wrapped a 30-second TV spot promoting Konami Digital Entertainment’s new “Dance Dance Revolution EXTREME 2” (DDR EXTREME 2) game for the PlayStation 2 computer entertainment system. Phoenix helped the agency with concept and handled design, animation and editorial for the CG spot, which features the digital arrows (familiar icons from the game) taking the shape of grooving dancers in a CG landscape. Mark Decena of Kontent Films directed the live-action shoot of the dancers. The spot breaks November 1st.

San Francisco, CA —Phoenix Edit, Effects & Design has moved into a new home in the Jackson Square area in San Francisco, CA.   The beautiful space, designed by the firm IA (Interior Architects), boasts expanded client amenities, a state-of-the-art technology infrastructure, and is now fully equipped to handle HD projects.   Several HD projects have recently come through Phoenix, including Kinka Usher-directed, Bob Frisk-edited spots for Disney and high-profile videos for Apple Computer and Sony. In addition to creative editing by Bob Frisk, Mitra Tyree, Robbie Proctor and Jim Farber, its motion graphics and visual effects department has taken off under the leadership of Matt Silverman.   Other recent projects posted at Phoenix include effects-intensive spots for Pacific Gas & Electric with director Rocky Morton of MJZ, and HP with DGA award-winning director Bob Kerstetter.

San Francisco, CA —To promote the thrilling new ride attraction “Soarin’” at Walt Disney World's Epcot Center, Phoenix Edit, Effects & Design editor Bob Frisk has cut a 30-second spot entitled “Flightless Birds” for ad agency Eleven Inc., San Francisco, directed by Kinka Usher of House of Usher. Guillermo Navarro, who lensed “Hellboy,” among other films, was cinematographer. The ad tells the story of penguins who won’t let their natural state prevent them from “soarin’” over Epcot. The spot recently began airing, with a Hi-Def version for movie theaters.

The :30 “Water Heater” and “Bad Refrigerator” have these household products springing to life and revolting to show that out-of-date appliances really rip owners off.

San Francisco, CA —Bay Area creative shop Phoenix Edit, Effects & Design announces the completion of “Chairs,” a 30-second TV spot for the HP 42-inch Plasma TV and HP Digital Entertainment Center. Veteran editor Bob Frisk cut the spot with longtime collaborator, director Bob Kerstetter of Chelsea Pictures, for ad agency Publicis & Hal Riney, San Francisco. Treo™ Smartphone calls on Phoenix

San Francisco, CA —Bay Area creative post-production shop Phoenix Edit, Effects & Design just wrapped a two-spot campaign for Treo™ 600 and Treo 650 smartphones from palmOne, Inc. The 15-second commercials, “The Assignment” and “Voicemails,” showcase the Treo smartphone’s multi-functions as a phone/PDA/camera/email device. Phoenix creative editor Bob Frisk collaborated with the company’s veteran effects editor and compositor John Crossley on the spots for ad agency AKQA. The spots were directed by James Williamson of A-List, New York.

Phoenix completes campaign for IDT

San Francisco, CA —Bay Area creative shop Phoenix Edit, Effects & Design announces the completion of two 60-second spots and four 30-second versions for the long distance carrier IDT. To convey how most telephone companies charge too much, ad agency Eleven Inc. and directors Andrew French and Nicholas Spooner of The Artists Company created “Bill,” an overweight middle-aged guy who is the campaign’s physical embodiment of a competitor’s bloated phone bill. In a white T-shirt that reads “Phone Bill,” Bill tags along uninvited to family dinners and get-togethers, spending people out of house and home. He finally gets the boot when the customers discover the lower-cost but just as dependable option, IDT.

Goodby, Silverstein & Partners turns to Phoenix for “Got Milk” Visual Effects.

Effects and Design Director Matt Silverman headed up visual effects work for “Russian Family,” a California Milk Processor Board spot. The effects scene was a cityscape establishing shot that combined still photographs of daytime Chicago apartment buildings and Moscow’s St. Peter’s Basilica with 3D matte painting, CG snow, lights, and billboards. The result was a beautifully melancholy 3D craning shot using camera mapping—the projection of still images onto 3D geometry--a technique Phoenix began with effects spots for Yahoo! and has since mastered.

Edited by Bob Frisk, the :30 spot for Sega’s Sonic Hereos game was directed by Justin Reardon with Turnpike Films for ad agency Duncan/Channon. Visual Effects were completed by Phoenix’ Matt Silverman and Bobby Van Dyke. The spot was conformed at Phoenix by veteran editor John Crossley.
